The questions people ask most

What if it's not the right fit?
That's exactly what the free 15-minute Fit Call is for. No pressure, and no obligation to continue.
What if what I'm dealing with isn't on your website?
That's fine. The areas on the site are the reasons people most often get in touch, not a list of the only things Deborah works with. She's a general counsellor, and sessions are one-to-one — so if something is weighing on you, you're welcome to bring it. If you're not sure whether it's something counselling can help with, ask in the free Fit Call.
What are online sessions like?
Sessions are held by video call, so you can talk from home or anywhere private. Appointments are available seven days a week including evenings.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book online anytime — no GP referral is required for private counselling.
How soon can I get an appointment?
There is no waiting list, and no referral or intake process to get through first — you book directly online. Appointments are available seven days a week, including evenings. The booking page shows the next available time before you enter any details, so you can see exactly how soon you could talk.
What will it cost?
The Fit Call is free. A standard 60-minute session is $90 and a 25-minute check-in is $50.

More questions

What if I can't afford the fee?
A concession rate is available. If $90 makes counselling hard to manage, please say so — in the Fit Call or any time after — and we'll work something out.
Is this online or in-person?
Reflect Renew Counselling is provided via telehealth — online, by video call. Sessions are available Australia-wide to clients in a private location.
What ages do you work with?
Deborah works with clients of all ages, from young people through to older adults. Sessions are one-to-one.
How long are sessions?
  • Fit Call: 15 minutes
  • Standard sessions: 60 minutes
  • Check-in sessions: 25 minutes (existing clients only)
What if I'm in crisis?
Reflect Renew Counselling is not a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger call 000. If you need urgent support call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
Is my information confidential?
Yes. Deborah works to professional and ethical standards as an ACA member. Confidentiality and its limits (including mandatory reporting and legal exceptions) are discussed clearly in your first appointment.
Do you have policies or paperwork?
Yes. As part of the booking process you'll complete a short intake form and review and accept the relevant policies online — no email paperwork required. You can read the Privacy Policy and Terms of Use on the website before booking.
Can I contact you between sessions?
Deborah isn't on call between sessions, but you can email any time and she'll reply during office hours.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give at least 24 hours' notice to reschedule or cancel. Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice will receive a 50% refund.
Can I get a Medicare rebate?
Medicare rebates don't apply to counselling. In practice that means no GP visit, no Mental Health Treatment Plan, and no limit set by Medicare on how many sessions you can have. The fee is $90 a session, flat — the same whether it's your first or your tenth.

Understanding counselling in Australia

Can you see a counsellor without a GP referral in Australia?

Yes. You do not need a GP referral to see a counsellor privately in Australia. Counselling is a private-pay service, so you can book directly — there is no doctor’s appointment, no Mental Health Treatment Plan, and no waiting for paperwork before you start.

Booking a session, or a free 15-minute Fit Call, takes a couple of minutes online, and you choose the counsellor you would like to work with rather than being referred to whoever is available. If you would rather book by phone, call (03) 8007 3516 — if Deborah is in a session, leave a message and she will call you back.

What is the difference between a counsellor and a psychologist in Australia?

The main differences are in registration and Medicare eligibility, not in the value of the support. Both counsellors and psychologists provide confidential, talk-based help.

Psychologists are registered with AHPRA, the national health-practitioner regulator, and their sessions can attract a Medicare rebate when you have a GP referral and a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Counsellors are registered through a professional association rather than AHPRA — Deborah is a Registered Counsellor (Level 2) with the Australian Counselling Association — and counselling is not eligible for a Medicare rebate.

Which is the better fit depends on your needs, your preferences, and your budget. A free Fit Call is an easy way to work out whether counselling with Reflect Renew suits what you are looking for.

How much does counselling cost in Australia, and why isn’t it Medicare-rebatable?

Private counselling fees vary between practitioners. At Reflect Renew, the first Fit Call is free and a standard 60-minute session is $90, a flat fee.

Counselling is not covered by Medicare because Medicare rebates apply only to certain AHPRA-registered practitioners, and counsellors are registered through a professional association instead. In practice that means there is no GP visit, no Mental Health Treatment Plan, and no limit set by Medicare on the number of sessions you can have — you book directly and pay a predictable fee each time.

Can counselling help family and unpaid carers?

Yes. Counselling gives family and unpaid carers a confidential place to put down some of what a caring role builds up — exhaustion, grief, guilt, and the sense of losing yourself in it.

Caring responsibilities are one of the concerns Deborah supports, alongside grief, anxiety, stress and life transitions, and she brings personal experience of more than ten years in a caring role. No referral is needed, and sessions are held online across Australia.

Reflect Renew is not a crisis service. In an emergency call 000, or Lifeline 13 11 14.
